August 2025 Presentation

  • Engineers Club of Dayton 10 E Monument Ave Dayton, OH 45402 United States (map)

This presentation provides a practical understanding of how traffic signal controllers are programmed, integrated, and optimized to support dynamic and efficient transportation systems through a look at the role of electronic traffic signal controllers in modern intersection management.  Attendees will gain an understanding of controller hardware components, signal phasing logic, and the fundamentals of signal timing and programming for efficient traffic flow.  Key timing parameters, coordination techniques, and how detection technologies, such as inductive loops, video, and radar, are used to inform controller decisions will be discussed with emphasis placed on the benefits of coordinated signal systems. Further, we will discuss traffic-responsive operation, including real-time plan selection and fully adaptive systems exploring how controllers support emergency vehicle pre-emption and transit priority, enhancing safety and reliability.

Mr. Hafner is the TEC Vice President of Engineering with 25 years of experience in project management, analysis and design for traffic engineering projects including traffic signal and signal system design, traffic signal retiming, intelligent transportation system (ITS) design, interchange modification studies, safety studies, and traffic impact studies.

Mr. Morse is a seasoned professional with 14 years of experience in the transportation industry specializing in the sales and implementation of advanced traffic management technologies.

Mr. McCartney is a Systems Support Engineer with over 20 years of experience in the transportation industry and specializes in providing technical support and training for traffic controllers, detection systems, and management technologies to industry professionals.

A buffet lunch will be served.

Attendees will receive 1.0 Professional Development Hours for Engineering
