John Norton, PE, BCEE, will present a talk on how well the Dayton area is doing with its Solid Waste Management compared to the rest of the United States and the world.  Mr. Norton was responsible for Strategic and Operational Engineering and Management for Montgomery County’s 500,000 Ton per Year regional municipal solid waste program including two 750 Ton per Day incinerator plants (one with an energy recovery system), a large composting system, a fleet of transfer trucks, three transfer stations, and an ash mono-fill with full scale metal recovery and experimental full scale ash recycling.  He designed, specified, bid, managed construction, and operated two additional new incinerators; one with a very successful 6000 kW energy recovery system.  He also initiated an ash-recycling project which culminated in construction and occupation of two large ash block buildings, one for ash mono-fill maintenance equipment and staff, and one for processing fly and bottom ash into a solid gravel substitute.

Mr. Norton has a Civil Engineering Degree (BSCE) from University of Illinois in 1967, became a Registered PE in Ohio in 1972, and has 50 years of experience designing and operating environmental processes (wastewater plants, incinerators and energy recovery, and stormwater solutions).  As a member of the ASME he has served as National Chair of their “Materials and Energy Recovery” Division.
